Pahalgam attack: Court extends probe and custody

A special NIA court in Jammu has extended the probe and custody of two accused in the Pahalgam attack case by 45 days. Judge Sandeep Gandotra said investigators still need time to examine pending forensic and DNA profiling reports. He directed the NIA to move quickly and complete the investigation.

The accused, Bashir Ahmad Jothat from Baisaran and Parvaiz Ahmad from Batkote, both residents of Pahalgam, face allegations of sheltering Pakistani terrorists linked to the April attack. The Pahalgam attack killed 26 people and shocked the entire region. The NIA believes the two locals provided critical support that enabled the strike.

Earlier, the 90-day custodial remand and 10-day judicial custody of the accused was due to expire on September 18. On that day, the two men appeared before the court through virtual mode. The court then extended their remand for another 45 days, giving investigators more time to pursue leads.

Judge Gandotra said the case involves serious national security concerns. Therefore, investigators must follow every clue and submit evidence backed by science. Forensic findings and DNA results will play an important role in proving the charges.

The Pahalgam attack probe remains a top priority for security agencies. Officials say the attack could not break the morale of the forces, but it has reinforced the need for stronger intelligence and tighter networks. They believe a thorough investigation will expose the full chain of command behind the terrorists.

With the extension, the NIA can now interrogate the accused further, match DNA samples, and build a stronger chargesheet. The court also reminded the agency that the probe should not face unnecessary delays. For the families of the victims, justice in the Pahalgam attack case depends on a complete and fair investigation.
