Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif appeared flustered during a recent interview regarding his claims about former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s X (formerly Twitter) account. Asif had earlier alleged that Khan’s account was being operated from India. However, during an interview with British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan, he contradicted himself, suggesting that Khan was managing the account from his Adiala Jail cell.
When Hasan questioned him about the inconsistency, Asif struggled to provide a clear answer. He initially insisted, “He (Imran Khan) is operating a Twitter account from Twitter,” but was promptly reminded of his earlier statement about India. Pressed further, Asif admitted, “Either he is operating from the cell or he should at least identify who is operating it,” while declining to provide evidence, citing intelligence sources.
Asif also commented on Pakistan’s international relations, particularly its ties with the US and China. He highlighted that Pakistan’s relationship with China is “time-tested” and emphasized that China has been a reliable provider of military hardware, including submarines, aircraft, and other defense equipment. He suggested that Pakistan views China as a more dependable ally than the United States.
The interview left Asif visibly unsettled, drawing attention to the contradictions in his public statements about Khan’s social media activity.
