US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “not that happy” with him because India was paying high tariffs on American goods during his administration. Speaking in Washington, Trump reiterated his long-standing criticism of India’s trade policies, describing the country as one of the “highest tariffing nations in the world.”
Trump claimed that his tough stance on tariffs had strained ties with New Delhi, even as he maintained that the measures were necessary to protect American interests. He also referred to defence ties between the two countries, stating that India had told him it had been waiting for nearly five years to receive Apache attack helicopters from the US.
Highlighting delays in defence procurement, Trump suggested that despite strong strategic relations, trade and delivery issues had caused friction. His remarks come amid ongoing discussions on strengthening US–India defence cooperation and resolving trade disputes, which remain a key aspect of bilateral relations.
