Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation on the occasion of Swahid Diwas. He said the movement holds a special place in India’s history and reflects the unmatched courage and sacrifice of those who fought to protect Assam’s identity. PM Modi reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to preserving Assam’s culture and advancing development in the state. He wrote on X that the nation remembers every brave soul who laid down their life during the agitation.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also honoured the martyrs, describing the Assam Agitation as a grand struggle to safeguard the state’s language, culture, and demographic identity. He said 860 Assamese youths sacrificed their lives, inspiring generations to unite for national interest.
Swahid Diwas is observed every year on 10 December to honour those who died during the 1979 Assam Agitation led by AASU and AASGP against illegal infiltration.
