PM Modi Supports Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Amid Protests

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal’s newly-appointed interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. He expressed India’s full support for her efforts to restore peace and stability in Nepal after youth-led protests disrupted the country.

PM Modi offered condolences for the tragic loss of lives during the protests that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. He also wished Ms. Karki and the people of Nepal well on their National Day, which falls tomorrow.

Ms. Karki became interim prime minister on Friday, just three days after Oli resigned amid severe unrest. She was chosen after a meeting between Nepal’s President Ramchandra Paudel, military leaders, and youth protesters.

The protests, led by young people, began as a response to a government ban on social media. They later expanded into a wider movement against alleged corruption and the political elite’s lifestyle. Although the social media ban was lifted on September 8, protests continued. Oli’s resignation was seen as a step towards resolving Nepal’s political crisis. The new government is set to hold elections on March 5, 2026.
