Polavaram and Markapuram Declared as New Districts in Andhra Pradesh
Two new districts, Polavaram and Markapuram, have officially come into force in Andhra Pradesh with effect from December 31, 2025, as part of the State government’s administrative reforms. The reorganisation is aimed at streamlining governance, improving accessibility to government services, and addressing region-specific development needs more effectively.
Polavaram district has been carved out to focus on tribal welfare, irrigation management, and rehabilitation issues linked to the Polavaram irrigation project. Markapuram district, on the other hand, is expected to strengthen administrative outreach in the drought-prone western parts of the State, with emphasis on agriculture, water management, and infrastructure development.
Government officials said the creation of the new districts would reduce the distance citizens need to travel for administrative services and enable faster implementation of welfare schemes. District-level offices, including revenue, police, and line departments, have begun functioning to ensure a smooth transition.
The State government expressed confidence that the new districts would accelerate balanced regional development and improve overall governance efficiency
