The GST Council, in its recent meeting, announced several tax changes and also made a rare exemption. It excluded President Droupadi Murmu’s new BMW armored sedan from Integrated GST and compensation cess.
The ₹3.66 crore bulletproof BMW will replace the Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman limousine in the President’s fleet. Officials explained that the exemption applies because the car ensures state security and cannot be treated as a luxury product.
Council members stressed that the armored BMW is vital for the President’s safety. The vehicle’s bulletproof design and security features justify the special status. The decision reflects the government’s position that the President’s transport is a strategic asset, not a commercial luxury import.
India usually imposes 28% IGST, customs duty, and additional cess on imported luxury cars. This makes the exemption stand out as one of the rarest council decisions. Authorities said the move highlights the unique importance of the President’s security needs.
