President Droupadi Murmu met Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko in Gaborone on Wednesday. Both leaders agreed to expand cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, renewable energy, health, education, skill development, defence, and digital technology.
The two countries signed an agreement to provide affordable, high-quality Indian medicines to Botswana’s citizens. President Murmu thanked Botswana for sending cheetahs to India as part of Project Cheetah, enhancing wildlife cooperation.
President Murmu arrived in Botswana late Tuesday for a state visit, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state. She received a ceremonial welcome and guard of honour at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. During her stay, she will address Botswana’s National Assembly, meet the Indian community, and visit cultural and historical sites.
The visit highlights India-Botswana ties as both nations prepare to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations next year. Officials said Botswana’s Vision 2036 aims to diversify its economy, creating opportunities for Indian businesses. President Murmu came from Angola, where she attended the 50th Independence Day celebrations, addressed the National Assembly, and held talks with her Angolan counterpart.
