Punjab BJP Seeks Memorial for Sikh Disciples

Punjab BJP Seeks Memorial

The Punjab BJP Seeks Grand Memorial to honour Guru Tegh Bahadur’s disciples who protected religious freedom. The Punjab BJP Seeks Grand Memorial proposal came from the BJP Scheduled Caste (SC) Morcha. Its leaders said the state must recognise the courage of Bhai Dayal Das, Bhai Mati Das and Bhai Sati Das.

Paramjit Singh Kainth, Vice-President of the SC Morcha, wrote to the Central and state governments. He urged them to approve a memorial soon. He said the disciples stood with Guru Tegh Bahadur during a time of intense persecution. Moreover, they refused to accept Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s policy of forced conversions.

Aurangzeb had imposed strict religious rules. He also re-introduced the jizya tax and ordered the demolition of temples. According to Kainth, the three disciples chose sacrifice over fear. In November 1675, Bhai Mati Das was cut in two. Bhai Dayal Das was boiled alive. Soon after, Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton and burnt.

Their courage inspired many people. It also strengthened the fight for justice and dignity. Guru Tegh Bahadur’s sacrifice later earned him the title Hind-di-Chadar, the shield of India.

Kainth said a memorial will preserve this legacy. He added that future generations must know the story of these brave men.
