A local court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Punjab AAP MLA Harmeet Pathanmajra, who faces charges of rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation. Pathanmajra’s counsel, Simranjit Saggu, confirmed that Additional Sessions Judge Navdeep Gill dismissed the plea. The legislator will now move the Punjab and Haryana High Court for relief.
Police registered a case against Pathanmajra on September 1 following a complaint by a Zirakpur woman. She alleged that the MLA misrepresented himself as divorced, entered into a relationship, and later married her in 2021 while already married. She further accused him of sexual exploitation, threats, and sending obscene content.
Pathanmajra, a first-time MLA from Sanour, has been absconding since September 2. He escaped during a police operation in Karnal, Haryana, where his supporters allegedly hurled stones and fired gunshots to prevent his arrest.
The MLA, however, denied police claims in a video message, alleging that there was a plan to kill him in a “fake encounter.” Police sources said multiple raids have been conducted across Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, but he remains at large.
