The Punjab and Haryana High Court strongly pulled up the Punjab government over the murder of kabaddi player and promoter Rana Balachauria. He was shot dead in public view at Sohana in Mohali a few days ago. The court expressed serious concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab.

During the hearing, the High Court linked the crime to the alleged glorification of criminals. The Bench referred to controversies around interviews of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. It observed that earlier directions to curb such glorification were not implemented effectively.

A Division Bench of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Deepak Manchanda directed the Punjab Director General of Police to appear personally on January 15. The DGP has been asked to submit a detailed response.

The court noted that the murder took place around 5.55 pm at a crowded stadium. Nearly 1,000 people were present at the time. An affidavit stated that 10 armed police personnel were deployed at the venue. Despite this, two assailants opened fire and escaped.

The court termed the incident extremely serious. It questioned why no arrests have been made so far. The Bench also sought answers on steps being taken to prevent targeted killings and organised crime.

The court stressed that citizen safety must remain the state’s top priority.
