The Russian Embassy in India dismissed several local media reports regarding Russian citizen Victoria Basu, calling them speculative and inaccurate. The embassy stated that these reports do not reflect reality and reaffirmed its commitment to protect the rights of Russian nationals in India under Indian law.
Victoria, who has lived in India since 2019, allegedly left for Russia with her four-year-old child amid an ongoing custody battle with her estranged Indian husband, Saikat Basu. The embassy said it remains in close contact with Indian authorities over the matter to ensure compliance with legal procedures.
The statement followed the Supreme Court’s concern over the lack of a detailed response from the Russian side about Victoria’s whereabouts. The court said it did not wish to affect diplomatic ties but emphasized that the child’s safety was paramount.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi gave authorities two more weeks to coordinate with Russian officials. Meanwhile, Saikat Basu claimed he has no knowledge of his wife and child’s current location as the custody dispute continues.
