The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has suspended B Murari Babu, Deputy Devaswom Commissioner of Haripad, over the alleged disappearance of 4.54 kg of gold from the gold-plated Dwarapalaka idols at the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple in Kerala.
The incident dates back to June 17, 2019, when Murari Babu was serving as the temple’s Administrative Officer. On that day, he submitted a report to the Sabarimala Executive Officer, mistakenly noting the gold-plated Dwarapalaka idols as copper sheets. The TDB termed the error a “serious lapse” and announced that Babu will remain suspended pending a full inquiry.
Speaking to the media in Alappuzha, Murari Babu defended himself, stating that his report was preliminary and prepared after consulting the temple tantri, following standard procedures. “I noted copper because it was clearly visible. The idols were later directed to be plated,” he said.
The suspension is part of the ongoing Sabarimala missing gold case, which involves gold going missing during renovation work carried out by Chennai-based Smart Creations, sponsored by devotee Unnikrishnan Potty. The TDB has ordered a detailed investigation to determine accountability and recover the missing items.
