Voting began today for 121 seats in the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections. A day before polling in Munger, Jan Suraj candidate Sanjay Kumar Singh surprised many by quitting his party and joining the BJP. He pledged full support to BJP’s candidate Kumar Pranay, calling his decision one made for “development and stable governance.”
Sanjay, 52, said he would work to ensure Pranay’s “landslide victory.” Welcoming him, Pranay described Sanjay as an elder brother and said his backing added strength to the campaign for progress and stability in Munger.
With Sanjay’s exit, Jan Suraj has lost four candidates—others from Danapur, Brahmapur, and Gopalganj have already withdrawn. A district BJP official praised Sanjay for believing in the party’s development vision and placing public interest above personal ambition.
Meanwhile, Jan Suraj founder Prashant Kishor accused the BJP of intimidating his candidates, naming Amit Shah and Dharmendra Pradhan. He claimed the BJP feared the “professional and honest candidates” of his party.
In the 2020 Assembly polls, BJP’s Pranav Kumar Yadav narrowly defeated RJD’s Avinash Kumar Vidyarthi in Munger by just 1,000 votes.
