Sanskrit cricket tournament Bhopal has turned heads with its unique blend of sport, tradition, and language. The event is unfolding in the Madhya Pradesh capital with rare cultural flair. Players walk onto the pitch wearing dhoti-kurta, sporting tilak, and chanting Vedic mantras.
The tournament, titled Maharishi Maitri Cricket Series-6, replaces English cricket terms with Sanskrit expressions. When a batter hits a four, commentators announce “Chatushkam.” A six draws loud cheers of “Shatkam” from loudspeakers. This Sanskrit commentary has delighted spectators and gone viral online.
The matches take place at Ankur Sports Ground in Bhopal. The Parshuram Kalyan Board and Vedic Brahmin Youth Sports Welfare Committee jointly organised the event. Organisers aim to promote Sanskrit, Sanatan culture, and social harmony through sports.
This year, 27 teams from across the country have joined the competition. All players follow traditional attire rules. Every announcement, decision, and commentary uses Sanskrit only. Spectators enjoy both competitive cricket and a cultural learning experience.
Pandit Vishnu Rajoriya said the tournament presents an Indian expression of a global sport. He added that students of Sanskrit and members of the Brahmin community participate actively. The winning team will receive a cash prize of ₹21,000.
