The controversy over SGPC Moves Akal Takht Against MLA Sandhu intensified today as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee formally asked the Akal Takht to take strict action. The SGPC accused newly elected Tarn Taran MLA Harmeet Singh Sandhu of attacking Sikh principles for political advantage. The issue erupted after a video surfaced in which Sandhu alleged that “Guru di Golak” was misused during the Tarn Taran bypoll.
Sandhu recently left the SAD to join AAP. He won the bypoll by nearly 12,000 votes. In his speech, he claimed that some groups threatened voters and distributed ration and money by misusing the donation box of the Guru. The remarks angered the SGPC leadership.
SGPC senior vice president Raghujit Singh Virk said Sandhu tried to defame the Sikh body for political mileage. He explained that “Guru di Golak” funds gurdwara work, welfare programs, and relief efforts. He pointed out that the SGPC supplied essential goods and quality seeds during the recent floods, while the government stayed absent.
SGPC general secretary Sher Singh said Sandhu’s allegations hurt Sikh sentiments. The SGPC urged Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj to summon Sandhu under the Sikh rehat maryada. An advisor to the Jathedar confirmed that the request has reached the office.
Meanwhile, Sandhu remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts.
