Shehbaz Sharif Meets Trump in New York

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting took place at a gathering of Arab Islamic leaders hosted by Trump and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

Sharif reportedly had an informal chat with Trump after the summit ended. He led the Pakistani delegation to the high-level UNGA segment, accompanied by his deputy, Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, and other senior officials. Pakistan’s Army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, was expected to join but did not attend.

US-Pakistan relations have warmed recently. Islamabad praised Trump for his role in brokering a ceasefire with India during the May military conflict, although India denied his involvement. Pakistan even nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation efforts.

Earlier this year, Trump hosted Munir at the White House to discuss trade, economic development, and cryptocurrency. The US later announced a trade deal with Pakistan and pledged support to develop its oil reserves. In August, Pakistan secured a $500 million US investment to boost its critical minerals sector, signaling growing cooperation between the two countries.
