India captain Shubman Gill celebrated his first series win as skipper after India defeated West Indies 2-0 at Arun Jaitley Stadium. India chased 121 runs in the first hour of day five to win by seven wickets and gain 12 World Test Championship points. Gill said leading the team is “a great honour” and explained he focuses on making the right decisions at critical moments.
Gill enforced the follow-on after India took a 270-run lead. He said even with a larger lead, taking six or seven wickets on day five could have been tough. Additionally, he highlighted the need to groom players like Nitish Kumar Reddy for future overseas challenges rather than putting immediate pressure on them.
On his batting approach at number four, Gill said he always prioritizes the team’s victory. “Batting is about helping the team win,” he added. Looking ahead, he expressed excitement for his first assignment as ODI captain during India’s Australia tour starting October 19.
Meanwhile, West Indies captain Roston Chase appreciated his team’s fightback. Centuries from John Campbell and Shai Hope helped them score 390 in the second innings. Chase said the match will boost confidence and prepare the team for upcoming series.
