Sikkim inter-department cricket tournament began on Sunday at the Sikkim Cricket Ground in Rangpo, marking the launch of the first edition of the event. The opening match featured teams from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and the Power Department.

Tournament Organisation and Format

The Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA), in collaboration with the Government of Sikkim, organised the tournament. A total of 28 government departments and Public Sector Undertakings are participating. Officials divided the teams into two groups to ensure balanced competition.

Moreover, organisers scheduled 42 league matches over a span of 17 days. Each team will play at least three matches in the league stage. After that, the top four teams from each group will move into the knockout rounds.

Opening Match Results

Meanwhile, the Power Department won the toss in the opening match and chose to bat first. Under the leadership of captain Bhanu Sharma, the team scored 103 runs in 20 overs. The Chief Minister’s Office team, led by Tenzing Chopel, chased the target with determination.

However, the CMO team managed 91 runs in their allotted overs. As a result, the Power Department secured a 12-run victory. Palzor Bhutia played a crucial role in the win and earned the Man of the Match award.

Aim of the Tournament

Officials said the tournament promotes fitness, teamwork, and healthy competition among government employees. Additionally, it encourages interaction between departments beyond official duties. Sports officials believe such events help build discipline and camaraderie.

Prize Money and Sponsorship

The organisers announced significant prize money to motivate teams. The tournament winners will receive ₹10 lakh. The runners-up will get ₹5 lakh. The State Bank of Sikkim is sponsoring the prize amounts.

Therefore, the Sikkim inter-department cricket tournament is expected to boost sporting culture in the state and attract strong participation throughout its duration.
