Sikkim National Press Day Celebration Honors Journalists

Sikkim celebrates National Press Day, honouring journalists for excellence in print, electronic, and digital media

Gangtok, Sikkim — 25 November 2025:
Sikkim celebrated National Press Day with a grand state-level programme at Manan Kendra, bringing together journalists, media professionals, and dignitaries to honour the critical role of the press in a democratic society. The event highlighted the media’s contribution to truth, transparency, and public service, while recognising journalists for their exemplary work across print, electronic, and digital platforms.

The programme featured an award ceremony celebrating reporters and editors for impactful reporting on topics such as climate change, women’s rights, and human interest stories. Organisers emphasised that National Press Day, observed annually to mark the founding of the Press Council of India, serves as a reminder of the press’s responsibility as a watchdog and guardian of democratic values.

Interactive sessions offered journalists a platform to discuss challenges such as misinformation, shrinking press freedom, and safety concerns. The Press Club of Sikkim showcased initiatives to support media professionals, including health insurance schemes, pension benefits, exposure tours, and annual grants aimed at enhancing journalists’ welfare. Senior journalists from Delhi also attended, sharing insights on the evolving landscape of Indian journalism and the importance of ethical, fact-based reporting.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who postponed the original November 16 programme to personally attend, praised the strengthened relationship between the state government and the media under the SKM administration, describing it as rooted in trust, openness, and mutual respect. He acknowledged journalists’ challenges, including the rise of misinformation, and reaffirmed government support through initiatives like the Sikkim Swastha Suraksha Yojana, enhanced advertisement rates, and institutional recognition through awards.

Congratulating awardees, the Chief Minister urged the media to continue serving as Sikkim’s “Third Eye”, reporting responsibly, combating misinformation, and highlighting youth and social issues. The event concluded with gratitude extended to all participants and organisers for making the celebration memorable.
