Sikkim to Launch Online Permit System for Nathu La, Lachen and Other High-Altitude Tourist Spots

Sikkim introduces online permit system for high-altitude tourist destinations

The Sikkim government is set to introduce a new online permit system for tourists heading to high-altitude and restricted regions such as Nathu La, Lachen, Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthang Valley and other protected zones.

Currently, travellers must rely on offline applications or travel agents to secure these mandatory permits. The new digital platform aims to simplify the process and make travel planning smoother for both domestic and international tourists.

Under the upcoming system, visitors will be able to:

  • Apply for permits online without visiting any office

  • Upload required documents directly on the portal

  • Receive faster approvals due to automated verification

  • Track the status of their permit applications in real time

Officials say the move will enhance transparency, reduce manual delays and improve tourist experience, especially during peak seasons when footfall to high-altitude destinations increases significantly.

By shifting to an online process, Sikkim hopes to modernize its travel management system while ensuring security protocols remain intact in these sensitive border zones.
