Sovereign AI: India’s Indigenous Model Set for February Rollout
India is accelerating its push toward technological self-reliance with a sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) model set to be ready by February 2026, according to IT Ministry Secretary S. Krishnan. The initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to develop homegrown AI capabilities that are inclusive, transparent, and tailored to India’s diverse linguistic and cultural needs.
To support this, India is rapidly scaling up its computing infrastructure, including plans to build indigenous data centers and GPU clusters. The AI model aims to serve as a public platform, accessible to startups, researchers, and industries, reducing reliance on foreign technologies.
Krishnan emphasized that the project aligns with India’s digital public infrastructure philosophy, ensuring that AI benefits reach all sectors of society. The move comes amid global concerns around AI ethics, data sovereignty, and digital dependency, positioning India as a key player in shaping the future of responsible AI.
