Spain High-Speed Train Crash Kills 21 in Andalusia

Spain

Spain faced national shock after a high-speed train collision in Andalusia killed 21 people and injured more than 70. The crash happened on Sunday evening near Adamuz. A Malaga to Madrid service derailed and crossed onto another track. It then struck an oncoming train bound for Huelva. Both trains left the rails.

Emergency officials confirmed at least 73 injuries. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise. Transport Minister Oscar Puente said 30 injured passengers remain in serious condition. Rail operator Iryo reported about 300 passengers on board the Malaga-Madrid service.

Firefighters described difficult rescue work. Twisted metal trapped passengers inside damaged carriages. Some coaches fell down a four-metre embankment. Survivors reported darkness, panic, and heavy luggage falling during the impact.

Rail authorities suspended high-speed services between Madrid and major Andalusian cities for Monday. Stations opened support centres for affected families. The defence ministry deployed emergency military units and vehicles to assist rescue efforts.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the tragedy a night of deep pain. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia expressed condolences. European leaders also offered support. Spain last faced a similar tragedy in 2013 near Santiago de Compostela.
