State Moves Supreme Court to Delay Voters’ List Revision Citing Clash with Local Body Elections
Kerala has approached the Supreme Court seeking to postpone the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that the process will clash with the upcoming local body elections. The State informed the court that the SIR is a time-consuming and resource-heavy exercise requiring extensive involvement of Booth Level Officers and other staff who are also essential for election duties. Conducting both tasks simultaneously, it said, would be impractical due to a shortage of personnel. Kerala clarified that it is not opposed to the SIR itself but wants it deferred until after the local body polls are completed, so that the revision can be carried out efficiently. Earlier, the High Court had declined to interfere, noting that related issues are already before the Supreme Court. The State has now sought urgent relief, stating that overlapping administrative responsibilities could compromise both the electoral roll revision and the election process.
