The Sugar Scam Verdict has finally arrived after 36 long years, bringing a major twist to an old corruption case in Bihar. The Sugar Scam Verdict convicted six former officials linked to the Lauria Sugar Mill for selling sugar through a fictitious firm. Records even showed sugar being moved on bikes, scooters, and government trucks.
The Special Vigilance Court found them guilty for the fraudulent sale of 997 sugar bags. Those convicted include former administration head Nand Kumar Singh, deputy manager Umesh Prasad Singh, clerk Sushil Kumar Srivastava, sugar clerk Lalbabu Prasad, sales in-charge Dhirendra Jha, and accounting officer Ajay Kumar Srivastava. The sentence will be announced on December 18.
A former DIG also testified in the case. The prosecutor explained that complaints were first made in 1989, but early investigations cleared the accused. Later, residents approached the Chief Minister, who ordered a vigilance probe.
Vigilance later found evidence of sugar worth ₹8.88 lakh being misused between 1989 and 1990. An FIR was filed in 2000 against 18 officials. Some accused have died over the years, while several did not appear in court.
