The Supreme Court has ordered the Central government to form a tribunal to resolve the Pennaiyar river disputebetween Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. A Bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath directed that the government should issue a notification to constitute the inter-State water disputes tribunal within one month.

The dispute relates to the sharing of Pennaiyar river water, which has long been a point of tension between the two states. Farmers and residents in both states depend on the river for agriculture and drinking water.

The Supreme Court emphasized that the tribunal must examine all claims and arrive at a fair decision according to law. Once formed, the tribunal will hear both states, study the water usage patterns, and decide the allocation of river water.

Officials from the Central government said they will comply with the Court’s order and notify the tribunal soon. This move is expected to bring a legal and lasting solution to the dispute.
