Supreme Court Issues Notice on Kerala Plea to Defer SIR
The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Election Commission regarding a plea from Kerala seeking the deferment of the Special Revision of Electoral Rolls (SIR). The court’s hearing comes amid growing disputes over the timing and process of the revision exercise, which aims to update voter lists ahead of upcoming elections.
Justice J. Kant observed that more political parties are approaching the Supreme Court to contest the SIR, reflecting increasing concerns over its implementation in Kerala. Parties have raised issues such as potential exclusion of eligible voters, administrative delays, and alleged irregularities in the revision process, prompting calls for deferment until these concerns are addressed.
The Election Commission has been asked to respond to the plea, after which the court will consider whether to allow the SIR to proceed as scheduled or postpone it. Stakeholders view the matter as significant for maintaining electoral fairness and ensuring every eligible voter is included in the rolls.
