The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Punjab government regarding the bail petition of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. The court has asked the state government to submit its response by January 19.

Majithia had earlier approached the Supreme Court after his bail plea was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The High Court had dismissed his application, prompting the senior Akali leader to escalate the matter to the apex court.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court considered the petition and directed the Punjab government to file a reply. The notice marks the first formal response from the apex court in the case.

The outcome of the Supreme Court proceedings will be closely watched, given Majithia’s political prominence in Punjab. His legal team argued that the bail rejection by the High Court requires reconsideration in light of legal provisions and circumstances surrounding the case.

The Supreme Court’s notice provides the Punjab government an opportunity to respond before further orders are passed. The matter is scheduled for follow-up proceedings after the January 19 deadline.

The case has attracted significant attention in Punjab’s political and legal circles, with implications for both the Akali Dal leadership and ongoing legal proceedings.
