T.N. CM Stalin Urges External Affairs Minister to Stop Fishermen Arrests
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar seeking permanent measures to prevent the arrest of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. In his letter, the Chief Minister referred to the recent incident in which 12 fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested and their mechanised fishing boat was seized on Tuesday.
Mr. Stalin expressed concern over the recurring arrests, stating that such incidents cause severe hardship to fishermen and their families who depend entirely on fishing for their livelihood. He urged the Union government to take sustained diplomatic steps with Sri Lanka to ensure the safety of fishermen and secure their immediate release whenever arrests occur.
The Chief Minister also called for measures to prevent the seizure of fishing boats, noting that the loss of equipment adds to the economic distress of fishing communities. He reiterated the State government’s commitment to protecting fishermen’s rights and requested long-term solutions to resolve the issue through dialogue and international cooperation.
