India made one change, with Rinku Singh replacing the rested Tilak Varma, who celebrates his 23rd birthday today.

Australia, led by Mitchell Marsh, are looking to level the series 2-2 after trailing 1-3. Marsh said the pitch looks great and expressed hope of finishing the tour on a positive note. “Lots to play for, both teams have played some great cricket. India bowled superbly last game,” he added.

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav once again lost the toss, prompting laughter among teammates. He said the team is focused on expressing themselves and sticking to their plan. “Until you’re winning games, losing tosses doesn’t matter. Everyone understood the conditions last match. We want to continue the same approach,” he said.

India aim to maintain their record of never losing a T20I series in Australia. The playing XIs are unchanged for Australia, while India’s lineup features Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah among others.

Australia’s captain Mitchell Marsh chose to bowl first under dark skies. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill started brightly, adding 35 runs before Nathan Ellis removed Abhishek. Suryakumar Yadav joined Gill and hit his 150th T20I six with a stylish flick over square leg.

Rain stopped the match for 40 minutes after five overs, cutting it to 18 overs per side. When play resumed, Suryakumar and Gill attacked quickly, adding 62 runs from 35 balls. Their partnership looked set for a big score before another downpour ended the contest. At the stoppage, Suryakumar was on 39 and Gill on 37.

BCCI later confirmed that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy will miss the first three T20Is.

A thrilling batting display at Dubai International Cricket Stadium saw India edge past Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2025 Super Fours on Friday. Both teams scored 202 in their 20 overs, forcing a Super Over to decide the match.

Chasing three runs in the Super Over, India’s Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill secured victory with one delivery, as Sri Lanka could only manage two runs against Arshdeep Singh’s bowling. Earlier, Sri Lanka’s top order, led by Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, shared a 127-run partnership to chase India’s 203-run target.

India’s innings was powered by Abhishek Sharma’s 61 and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 49. Sanju Samson and Axar Patel provided crucial late runs, helping the eight-time Asia Cup champions cross 200. Despite early wickets, the Indian batting unit recovered strongly to set a competitive total.

Sri Lanka’s resilient batting forced the tie despite wickets falling in the middle overs. Nissanka scored a brilliant century, but the team fell short in the Super Over. While the match was a dead rubber, Sri Lanka’s performance against the World No. 1 T20I side was encouraging ahead of the final.

Brief Scores: India 202/5 (Abhishek 61, Varma 49*; Asalanka 1-18) tie Sri Lanka 202 (Nissanka 107, Perera 58; Kuldeep 1-31). Super Over: India 3/0 beat Sri Lanka 2/2.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes young opener Abhishek Sharma has taken over the mantle of dominating the powerplay overs for India following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20 internationals. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif praised Abhishek’s fearless batting and said the left-hander is already proving himself as a genuine match-winner at the top of the order.

Kaif highlighted that India needed an aggressive striker to fill Rohit’s void, and Abhishek has answered that challenge with a series of explosive knocks in the Asia Cup 2025. “When Abhishek plays, he wins the game on his own. His range of strokes, power, and mindset make him a nightmare for bowlers. On his day, he can even smash six sixes in an over–it’s only a matter of time,” Kaif said.

The 25-year-old has been India’s standout performer in the tournament, leading the run charts with 173 runs in four innings at an average of 43.25 and an astonishing strike rate of 208.43. His consistency has also helped him retain the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I batting rankings.

Abhishek’s recent knocks have underlined his big-match temperament. In India’s Super 4 clash against Bangladesh in Dubai on September 24, he blasted 75 runs off just 37 balls, reaching his half-century in only 25 deliveries. This came after a match-winning 74 against Pakistan in the first Super 4 game, marking his second consecutive score of 70-plus in the tournament.

With India set to face Pakistan for the third time in the Asia Cup final on September 28, fans are eager to see if Abhishek can once again dominate the powerplay and deliver another headline-grabbing performance for Suryakumar Yadav’s side.

The series begins on September 30 and marks Iyer’s return to competitive cricket after recurring back spasms. Shreyas Iyer takes six-month red-ball break to focus on recovery and maintain his form in white-ball formats.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Iyer’s request to skip red-ball cricket until March 2026. He had previously led India A in the first unofficial Test but withdrew from the second match in Kanpur. Vice-captain Dhruv Jurel stepped in for the remainder of the series.

Iyer underwent back surgery in the UK in 2023 and has since been managing his fitness carefully. His decision to take a break from longer formats aligns with medical advice and personal goals. The BCCI also clarified that Iyer was not considered for the Irani Cup due to this planned rest.

Despite the break, Iyer remains a key figure in India’s white-ball plans. He will captain a promising India A squad featuring Prabhsimran Singh, Riyan Parag, Ayush Badoni, and Abhishek Sharma. The two-match ODI series offers a platform for these young players to shine under Iyer’s leadership.

Iyer expressed confidence in the squad and emphasized the importance of staying match-fit. He believes the break will help him rebuild strength and avoid further injuries. His presence also adds experience and stability to the team, which is preparing for future international assignments.

This strategic move allows Iyer to balance recovery with performance, ensuring he remains a strong contender for India’s ODI and T20 squads.

India’s economy begins the week on a fresh note as the long-awaited GST rate cut takes effect from today. Prices of several household items and services are expected to drop, giving relief to consumers battling rising costs. Experts believe this cut could boost demand in key sectors and add momentum to India’s growth story. Small businesses also hope the move will reduce tax pressure and improve cash flow.

On the cricket front, the Abhishek-Gill show against Pakistan lit up Dubai on Sunday (September 22, 2025). Openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill produced a dazzling partnership that helped India secure another commanding win over their arch-rival. Chasing 172, India reached the target in just 18.5 overs with six wickets in hand. This victory came after their seven-wicket triumph in the earlier group stage clash. The performance underlined India’s dominance in T20Is, where the head-to-head record heavily favors the Men in Blue.

Shubman Gill played with authority while Abhishek Sharma added flair with his strokeplay. Together, they kept the momentum going throughout the chase, thrilling Indian fans and frustrating Pakistan’s bowlers. Analysts say the Abhishek-Gill show against Pakistan proves India’s batting depth and composure in high-pressure matches.

Globally, concerns are rising in South Korea. President Lee Jae Myung warned that the country could face an economic crisis similar to the 1997 meltdown if Seoul agrees to U.S. trade demands without safeguards. Talks with Washington remain tense, despite a July verbal agreement that included tariff cuts and major South Korean investment.

With these economic shifts and sporting highlights, today’s Morning Digest sets the stage for a busy week ahead.
