The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in India is growing rapidly, transforming competition, business operations, and regulatory approaches, according to a new study by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The report highlights both the benefits of AI and emerging challenges that could affect market fairness.

Titled “Market Study on Artificial Intelligence and Competition,” the research was conducted through the Management Development Institute Society (MDIS). It analysed AI markets, identified potential competition issues, and reviewed existing and evolving regulations in India and abroad. The study used literature reviews, data analysis, interviews, and stakeholder surveys to gain a comprehensive understanding of the AI ecosystem.

CCI noted that the study revealed trends, market structure, applications of AI, and potential competition concerns in various sectors. To promote a competitive AI ecosystem, prevent anti-competitive practices, and protect consumers, the report proposes multiple measures. These include advocacy workshops, technical capacity building, inter-regulatory coordination, and engagement with international competition authorities.

The report also urges enterprises to conduct self-audits of AI systems to ensure compliance with competition laws. Companies are encouraged to adopt transparency measures to reduce information asymmetry and proactively address risks, helping India develop a responsible and competitive AI ecosystem.
