Earlier this year, the Civil Aviation Ministry gave the project its crucial in-principle approval, marking a big step forward for the ₹27,400 crore infrastructure project. The full development will require 5,750 acres, much of which is private land across 12 villages. The government has begun acquiring land under an industrial purposes act and has made progress, with many landowners in Nelvoy and Valathur agreeing to voluntary sales.

However, the project faces challenges. Eganapuram village has strongly opposed the development. With Tamil Nadu’s assembly elections approaching, the DMK government is being cautious. This delay has shifted the project timeline. The tender for the first phase is expected next year, with the first phase now projected to complete by 2030. The entire project should finish by 2046.

To encourage participation, the government has offered compensation packages for landowners. The compensation will range from ₹35 lakh to ₹60 lakh per acre.
