The RJD announces Sonu Rai as MLC by-election candidate after the seat became vacant when former MLC Radha Charan Sah won the Assembly election from the Sandesh constituency and became an MLA.

The Election Commission has scheduled voting for 12 May 2026, while counting of votes will take place on 14 May 2026.

Sonu Rai is an active leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and comes from Mirganj in Ara, Bhojpur district. His father, Lal Das Rai, earlier served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council and had strong political ties with Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Political observers expect a competitive contest as other parties may also announce their candidates soon. The election will be important because local authority representatives vote to elect the MLC.
