After the end of the Lalu–Rabri era, Nitish assumed power in 2005. His governance in the following five years delivered extraordinary results in the 2010 assembly elections. Under his leadership, the NDA secured 206 out of 243 seats, achieving 85% success—one of the biggest wins in Bihar’s history. In the 15th Assembly, the NDA grew stronger, gaining 63 more seats. The BJP added 36, while the JD(U) gained 27. On the other hand, the RJD weakened, winning only 22 seats, a loss of 32. Congress dropped drastically from 54 seats to just 4.

The foundation for this success was laid in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The JD(U) won 20 and the BJP 12 seats. Compared to only 11 combined in 2004, this surge took the NDA to 40 seats in 2009, setting the stage for their 2010 landslide.

Nitish’s governance stood out with law and order reforms and development projects. Crime fell sharply, and people felt safe even at night. The cycle scheme for schoolgirls brought a revolution in education and became popular nationwide, further boosting Nitish’s image.

In February 2005, Bihar witnessed a hung assembly. No party could form a stable government, which led to President’s Rule for about 262 days. Later, in October 2005, re-elections gave the NDA a clear majority, bringing an end to instability.

On 24 November 2005, Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister, while Rabri Devi of RJD became the Leader of Opposition. The public was tired of corruption, poor law and order, unemployment, and migration during the Lalu-Rabri era. Nitish’s promise of good governance and simple style appealed to the masses.

His Nyay Yatra across districts like Champaran and Kishanganj connected him with common people. In the re-election, NDA secured 143 seats with 36% votes, while RJD and Congress faced heavy losses. This mandate ended 15 years of Lalu-Rabri rule and gave Bihar a new political direction under Nitish Kumar.

This election proved to be a turning point for Congress. Once the strongest party, it collapsed badly. In the previous election, Congress had won 196 seats, but this time it fell to just 71, losing 125 seats. The wave of VP Singh’s politics at the Center in 1989 also boosted Janata Dal, helping it win 122 seats and secure a stable government.

Congress’s defeat was compared to its 1977 loss after the Emergency. The party secured only 24.78% votes and lost its dominance. Meanwhile, BJP strengthened its position with 39 seats, CPI won 23, and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) emerged strongly with 19 seats.

This election reshaped Bihar, showing the rise of BJP and JMM, and the steep decline of Congress.
