The incident happened at the Sheetla Mata Temple in the Maghra area of Nalanda district. Thousands of devotees had gathered for prayers when the crowd suddenly became uncontrollable. Panic spread quickly, leading to a deadly stampede inside the temple premises.

Police say some temple priests allegedly took money from devotees to allow special entry for worship. Authorities also accused them of beating devotees with sticks to control the crowd. This mismanagement reportedly created chaos and contributed to the deadly stampede.

Police have arrested four priests and registered a case against several other people linked to temple management. Investigators are examining crowd control failures and illegal practices at the temple.

Officials say stricter safety rules will be enforced at religious events to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Officials have started an investigation into the incident. Early reports suggest overcrowding and poor crowd management during the temple gathering may have triggered the deadly stampede.

After the Nalanda stampede, Bihar Director General of Police Vinay Kumar inspected the temple and raised serious concerns about management failures. He said the temple authorities focused more on collecting donations instead of arranging proper facilities for the large crowd.

The DGP also pointed out structural issues in the temple. According to him, the steep stairs and poorly designed entry and exit routes increased the risk of chaos during heavy gatherings.

Officials said around 25,000–30,000 devotees had gathered at the temple. However, there was no proper crowd control, drinking water facility, or emergency medical centre at the site.

Police have started reviewing CCTV footage to identify the cause of the incident. Authorities said strict legal action will follow if negligence by the temple management or officials is confirmed.
