In India, starting October 13, Anand will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. Discussions will focus on trade diversification, energy transformation, and strategic cooperation. She will also visit Mumbai to engage with Canadian and Indian businesses to boost investment and jobs.

The visit follows recent efforts to reset India-Canada relations, including the G7 meeting between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Mark Carney. New High Commissioners, Christopher Cooter and Dinesh K. Patnaik, have been appointed. NSA Ajit Doval also met his Canadian counterpart to discuss counterterrorism, transnational crime, and intelligence cooperation.

After India, Anand will travel to Singapore to meet Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, focusing on Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement negotiations. The tour will conclude in China, where she will meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss the Canada-China Strategic Partnership, building on commitments to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

The National Security Advisors of India and Canada, Ajit Doval and Nathalie G. Drouin, met in New Delhi. The meeting marked a structured effort to manage sensitive issues between the two countries. Analysts noted that the dialogue reflects a careful, rules-based approach rather than a dramatic restart of ties.

For India, the priorities highlighted were countering terrorism, protecting territorial integrity, and fighting transnational organised crime. Canada focused on upholding the rule of law, sovereignty, and non-interference. Both sides agreed to address differences methodically, fostering operational trust and reciprocity without political theatrics.

The arrest of Khalistani extremist Inderjit Singh Gosal in Ontario after the NSA meeting showed the results of structured engagement. Gosal, linked to the banned organisation Sikhs for Justice, had long been flagged by India. Canadian authorities acted under their own legal framework, demonstrating that enforcement can proceed without political interference.

Experts believe the meeting sets a “new normal” for India-Canada relations. Incremental and pragmatic steps are being taken to prevent disputes from undermining broader cooperation. Structured channels now exist to manage issues and anchor collaboration between the two nations.

India has been awarded the ICAO Council President Certificate for progress in aviation safety oversight. The recognition was presented at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada. DGCA chief Faiz Ahmed Kidwai received the certificate on behalf of India.

The award acknowledged India’s improvements in implementing International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices. It is part of the ‘No Country Left Behind’ initiative, granted to nations demonstrating significant progress in aviation safety oversight. ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano presented the certificate.

India’s Effective Implementation (EI) score jumped to 85.65% in the 2022 ICAO audit, up from 69.95% in 2018. This improvement placed India among the world’s top 50 countries in aviation safety oversight for the first time, moving up from 102nd in 2018. India now ranks higher than countries such as China, Israel, Turkey, Denmark, and Poland.

The enhanced safety ranking is expected to benefit Indian carriers expanding internationally. Airlines like Air India (Tata Group) and IndiGo can now face fewer inspections abroad. In contrast, carriers from countries with weaker safety records often undergo surprise checks at foreign airports, affecting operations and schedules.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged the United Nations to admit Palestine as a full member state during a French-led summit in New York on September 22. He emphasized that the process must be completed soon and on equal footing with other states.

Sanchez described the summit as “only the beginning” and called for immediate measures to stop the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, formally recognized Palestine in May, drawing sharp criticism from Israel.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the summit virtually, urging Hamas to surrender weapons and condemning civilian killings, including those by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attacks. The summit aimed to advance international recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to block Palestinian statehood, while far-right ministers support annexing the West Bank. The Biden administration also opposed the recognition, citing concerns that it rewards Hamas. The ongoing debate highlights divisions among global powers over Palestine’s international status.
