Indian employees remain reluctant to discuss mental health at work due to fear of being judged or seen as incapable. A report released on World Mental Health Day highlighted these concerns.

The survey by job portal Naukri, covering 19,650 job seekers, found 31% of professionals feared appearing incapable, while nearly 30% worried about colleagues’ judgment. About 21% said mental health disclosure could affect career growth or be dismissed as excuses.

Most employees avoid transparency when taking leave for mental health reasons. Around 45% mark it as general sick leave, while only 28% feel comfortable revealing the true reason. Nearly 20% prefer to skip leave, and 9% give false excuses.

Work-life imbalance tops stress factors at 39%, followed by micromanaging bosses (30%), lack of recognition (22%), and fear of mistakes (10%). Professionals call for flexible work options (60%), stress workshops (22%), paid mental health days (10%), and managerial training (9%). Openness varies across sectors, with BFSI showing the most transparency.

A software engineer recently shared their unusual experience of receiving a salary hike just four months after joining a mid-sized product-based company, sparking discussions on Reddit about work culture and employee growth.

The post, shared on the ‘r/DevelopersIndia’ subreddit, detailed how the techie, with 7.2 years of experience, initially received a 100% salary increase upon joining and then got another raise shortly after. The employee wrote, “CTC: 32 LPA after the hike. Was 31 LPA before. I joined a mid-sized product-based company, fully remote, about four months ago. When I joined, they even offered more than I asked for.”

What surprised the engineer most was the unexpected raise during the company’s appraisal cycle, despite not being officially eligible. “My manager reached out to inform me I’d be receiving a hike. I don’t know if it’s market correction or something else, but I’m not complaining,” they said.

The techie added that after years in service-based companies, this was their first product-based experience, and it left them feeling genuinely satisfied with their career. The company operates in the federated identity/cloud directory space, though the employee did not reveal its name.

Reddit users noted that such early appraisals are not unheard of. “Many good companies do quarterly appraisals so newcomers don’t have to wait a full year for their first raise,” one user said. Another commented, “Startups often give hikes every three to four months, though the workload is intense.”

The story sparked curiosity among new entrants about salary progression in service-based companies, while most agreed that the techie’s experience highlights that hard work and consistency can sometimes lead to unexpected rewards sooner than expected.
