The India-Bhutan rail initiative marks a landmark shift in cross-border connectivity. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri called it a “major new initiative” between the two nations. He emphasized that this project will deepen economic and strategic ties.

Misri explained that India and Bhutan will establish two new rail links. One will connect Kokrajhar (Assam) to Gelephu (Bhutan). The other will link Banarhat with Samtse. These routes will integrate Bhutan into India’s railway network.

The total investment is estimated at ₹4,033 crore, funded by India. Misri added that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) laying the groundwork for these links was signed during the Prime Minister’s visit to Bhutan. It will be formally ratified soon.

He also stressed that Bhutan’s new rail access will connect it to over 150,000 km of India’s rail network. Misri noted that this move underscores India’s long-standing role as Bhutan’s key development partner.

This rail connectivity will be historic: Bhutan currently has no operational rail network. In addition, the Kokrajhar–Gelephu stretch (approximately 69 km) has already been designated a Special Railway Project (SRP) to fast-track progress.

The plan expects positive ripple effects. It may boost trade, tourism, and regional integration. Also, it may enhance security and logistic resilience in the sensitive Siliguri Corridor region.

India and Bhutan thus embark on a new chapter in connectivity. In the coming months, detailed project layouts, timelines, and construction phases are likely to surface.
