The IMA Jewels building in Bengaluru, once the headquarters of the infamous I Monetary Advisory (IMA) Ponzi scheme, has now officially become the property of the Meghalaya government. The property was auctioned for ₹28.15 crore, marking a significant step in the ongoing effort to recover funds for thousands of investors who lost money in the multi-crore scam.

The Competent Authority (IMA), responsible for asset seizure and liquidation to repay cheated investors, had earlier attached the prime commercial property on Lady Curzon Road in Shivajinagar. The auction concluded recently, and, officials completed the registration of the building in Meghalaya’s name.

Regional Commissioner of Bengaluru division Amlan Aditya Biswas, who also serves as the Special Officer and Competent Authority, confirmed that the proceeds from the auction will be distributed to investors based on seniority and the amount they deposited.

The property, measuring 50×100 sqft with a five-storey structure built on 5,841 sqft, will now undergo transformation. Meghalaya officials revealed that the building will serve as a Meghalaya Government Office, offering administrative services as well as accommodation for students and residents from the state who visit Bengaluru. The facility will be named “Meghalaya House.”

According to officials, the Karnataka government had provisionally attached the building in 2022 under the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments Act, 2004. A special court later cleared it for auction, allowing Meghalaya to place a successful bid.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma welcomed the development, calling it a major support system for citizens living in or travelling to Bengaluru. He stated that a large number of Meghalaya students and professionals reside in the city, and this facility will help them during emergencies or periods of need.

Conrad Sangma education reforms were highlighted again as Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reiterated that improving the state’s education system is a top priority. He acknowledged that despite high spending, the system still faces major structural challenges.

Addressing a gathering in Sohra, Sangma admitted that the education system in Meghalaya has become complicated due to deep-rooted systemic issues. Despite substantial financial investment over the years, he said these hurdles have prevented the state from achieving the quality of education it envisions.

The Chief Minister stated that the government has already begun initiatives to streamline the sector, including rationalisation of schools and restructuring administrative frameworks. These steps, he said, are expected to bring gradual but meaningful improvements.

Sangma stressed that all educational decisions must be centred around students. He urged teachers, school authorities, and managing committees to ensure that every policy or action prioritises the needs of children rather than institutional or administrative convenience.

The remarks were made during the inauguration of the Ramakrishna Mission College in Sohra—the first college established by the Mission in the Northeast—affiliated to Captain Williamson Sangma State University. The event saw the presence of Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Swami Achyuteshananda, Trustee of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission.

Appreciating the Mission’s long-standing contribution to education, Sangma highlighted its role in shaping disciplined, empathetic, and value-driven students. He emphasised that building strong human capital is the most important investment any government can make.

Sangma also assured that infrastructure challenges faced by Mission-run schools—including poor road connectivity, inadequate electricity supply, and water shortages—will be taken up individually and resolved.

He thanked the Ramakrishna Mission for its dedication and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working jointly to provide quality education to children and youth across Meghalaya.

Efforts to build a new pan-Northeast political platform have sparked significant unrest within the National People’s Party (NPP) in Manipur, with senior state leaders openly expressing dissatisfaction over the direction and leadership changes linked to the proposed alliance. The initiative—driven by leaders from NPP and the Tipra Motha—has been criticised for taking on what Manipur leaders describe as a “tribal-centric” approach, creating concerns among members representing the valley population.

Tensions intensified after the Manipur unit underwent a sudden overhaul on Saturday. Former Outer Manipur MP Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze, who joined the NPP recently, was unexpectedly elevated to the post of state president, replacing senior leader and former deputy chief minister Yumnam Joykumar.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Joykumar revealed that the abrupt reshuffle took place barely 24 hours after a Manipur NPP delegation met the party’s national leadership in Shillong. The meeting was held to discuss details of the proposed pan-Northeast political entity. According to Joykumar, the leadership change happened without consulting senior state members, contradicting earlier remarks by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who had insisted that NPP does not operate under a high-command structure.

Joykumar said the Manipur delegation raised several sensitive issues during the Shillong meeting, including Manipur’s territorial integrity, demands for separate administrative arrangements in Kuki-majority areas, delimitation proposals favouring hill regions, the Sixth Schedule demand, and the ST status demand for Meiteis. However, the national leadership reportedly responded that these matters could be “settled through the election manifesto,” which the Manipur leaders felt sidelined the concerns of Meiteis and valley communities.

Joykumar noted that it is premature to decide on any major political shift but affirmed that their priority remains safeguarding Manipur’s interests. A final decision will be taken after broad consultations with party workers and local residents.

Meghalaya has reached a major milestone in its push to become a national filming hub, after the State completed its first full-length feature film under the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025. The Telugu crime-comedy Baa Baa Black Sheep wrapped a 25-day shoot entirely inside Meghalaya, with Sohra serving as the film’s primary backdrop.

The project, directed by Guni Manchikanti and produced by Chitralayam Studios, engaged nearly 2,000 local workers across production-related departments — including set construction, art teams, transport, sound, extras, logistics and catering. Officials say no previous project has involved such a large local workforce in Meghalaya’s creative sector.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the film demonstrates the State’s production capability and the success of the Tourism Policy. He highlighted that “100 per cent of the shots took place right here in Meghalaya” and noted the participation of “close to 2000 of our youths.” He expressed confidence that many more national-level productions will now choose Meghalaya “as a very popular destination.”

Producer Venu Donepudi called the support experience “great,” adding that completing a film “of this scale” in about 25 days “is going to be a record in itself.” He confirmed a Khasi-language release and invited the Chief Minister to attend the national premiere in Hyderabad.

The milestone aligns with Meghalaya Vision 2032, which identifies tourism and the creative economy as primary economic growth drivers. The Film Tourism Policy provides subsidies of up to ₹1 crore or 25% of production costs for the first ten films, along with incentives tied to local hiring and regional-language content.

As Baa Baa Black Sheep heads to post-production, it is being viewed as a landmark achievement that positions Meghalaya as a rising destination for large-scale film production and film-led tourism.

Former Lok Sabha MP Lorho S. Pfoze has been appointed president of the National People’s Party (NPP) Manipur unit, the party announced on Saturday. The decision marks a significant leadership shift as the party prepares for upcoming political engagements in the State.

The appointment was confirmed through an official statement issued by NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. Alongside Pfoze’s elevation, three legislators — Thongam Shanti Singh, J. Pamei and Sheikh Noorul Hassan — have been named working presidents of the State unit. Party leaders said the restructuring is intended to strengthen the organisation and improve coordination within the NPP’s grassroots network.

Pfoze represented Outer Manipur in the 17th Lok Sabha and joined the NPP in Shillong in September this year after resigning from the Naga People’s Front (NPF). His induction and swift ascent within the NPP are being seen as part of the party’s renewed push to expand its influence in Manipur’s hill and valley regions.

Political observers believe the leadership reshuffle signals a strategic phase for the NPP as it looks to consolidate its position in Manipur ahead of future electoral contests, including municipal and Assembly elections. The party is expected to build its campaign on themes of regional representation, governance reforms and indigenous identity.

The NPP currently has six MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, positioning it as a significant force in the State’s fast-shifting political landscape. The revamped leadership team is expected to begin statewide coordination meetings shortly.

Pfoze, in an informal statement to supporters, said he would prioritise organisational consolidation, outreach to tribal and minority groups and strengthening dialogue across communities.

With the fresh appointments, the NPP aims to enhance both its electoral preparedness and internal decision-making structure.

In a significant political development in Meghalaya, eight ministers resigned from the state cabinet today ahead of a major reshuffle. The resignations mark a crucial step in reorganizing the Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, which is supported by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and its coalition partners.

Those who stepped down include NCP leaders Ampareen Lyngdoh, Abu Taher Mondal, Rakkam Sangma, and Comingone Ymbon; UDP leaders Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla; HSPDP leader Shakliar Warjri; and BJP’s A.L. Hek.

According to sources, the reshuffle comes as part of a seat-sharing agreement among alliance partners to balance representation within the cabinet. New ministers are expected to be sworn in at Raj Bhavan later this evening . Political analysts say the reshuffle reflects growing adjustments in the coalition to maintain stability and accommodate diverse regional and party interests in governance.
