IBSA, established in 2003, is a trilateral forum connecting three major democracies and emerging economies—India, Brazil, and South Africa. The platform promotes South-South cooperation and collaboration on political, economic, and social issues.

PM Modi noted that the meeting was significant as it coincided with the first-ever G20 Summit held on African soil and followed four consecutive G20 presidencies by Global South nations, including three by IBSA members.

On the sidelines, PM Modi met key global leaders including Cyril Ramaphosa, Japan’s Sanae Taka, Canada’s Mark Carney, and Italy’s Giorgia Meloni.

The South African G20 presidency focused on themes of solidarity, equality, sustainability, disaster resilience, debt relief, and a just energy transition. The summit concluded with calls for stronger global cooperation and sustainable development.

The Prime Minister will also take part in the IBSA Leaders’ Meeting and is expected to hold several bilateral discussions with attending world leaders.

The Summit’s key sessions include:
• Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth, with emphasis on trade, development financing and debt challenges.
• A Resilient World, covering disaster management, climate change and food systems.
• A Fair and Just Future, focusing on AI, decent work and critical minerals.

The event comes amid controversy, as US President Donald Trump has announced a complete boycott of the G20 in South Africa, citing alleged human rights violations against the Afrikaner minority. Trump declared that no American official will attend and criticised South Africa’s inclusion in the G20.
