Modi had earlier declared in his election affidavit that he completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Delhi University in 1978. Based on this, an individual filed a Right to Information (RTI) plea seeking official verification of his academic qualification.

The CIC directed Delhi University to share the records, but the university challenged the directive. University lawyers argued that academic records fall under personal information and cannot be disclosed without strong public interest. The case then moved to the Delhi High Court for review.

The High Court agreed with Delhi University and rejected the CIC’s order. The ruling has triggered political reactions. Opposition leaders have raised questions about transparency, while BJP members welcomed the verdict. Party leaders said the judgment protected personal privacy and upheld legal principles.
