Aizawl-based environmental organisation Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ) has strongly voiced Mizoram Railway Extension Opposition, warning that the proposed expansion from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah in the state’s southern region could pose serious ecological challenges. The group stressed that Mizoram’s fragile hills and fast-depleting water sources cannot withstand another large-scale infrastructure project.

CESJ treasurer Saizampuii Sailo said the extension toward Hmawngbuchhuah, located near the Myanmar border in Lawngtlai district, threatens to damage vital river systems and further strain the state’s delicate environment. She cautioned that the region is already witnessing shrinking water sources, and large construction activities could accelerate an impending water crisis.

Sailo also highlighted socio-demographic concerns, arguing that railway access may lead to an influx of outsiders, citing examples from other northeastern states. “Nagaland refused to extend its railway line deeper into the state after the Dimapur route triggered migration. Meghalaya, too, opposed a similar project due to fears of demographic imbalance,” she noted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sairang–Bairabi railway line in September, connecting Mizoram with the national rail network for the first time. The project, considered one of the toughest undertaken by Indian Railways, links Aizawl with the rest of the country via Silchar in Assam. Since its launch, the state has recorded a rise in tourist arrivals.

However, CESJ maintains that the next phase of railway expansion must be reconsidered. The organisation pledged to oppose the plan “till the end,” urging policymakers to prioritise sustainability over large-scale development. They emphasised that safeguarding Mizoram’s environment is critical to ensuring long-term water security and ecological balance.

Ladakh Defence Infrastructure Projects have taken centre stage after the Union Territory cleared 16 new proposals focused on strategic connectivity and green accountability. The Ladakh Defence Infrastructure Projects received approval during the State Board for Wildlife meeting chaired by Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta, reflecting equal priority on national security and ecological protection.

These projects involve the Indian Army, BRO and the Power Development Department, all operating near sensitive zones such as Karakoram and Changthang Wildlife Sanctuaries. Officials highlighted that road links, energy upgrades and defence logistics will strengthen frontier readiness, especially along borders with China and Pakistan.

At the same time, authorities insisted on strict environmental safeguards. Every project must follow forest, wildlife and climate guidelines, conduct biological impact studies and preserve wildlife corridors. The administration underlined zero tolerance for ecological damage and urged agencies to innovate responsibly in Ladakh’s fragile terrain.

Local stakeholders believe improved connectivity may also support tourism, healthcare access and village development if executed sensitively. Experts, however, stress strong monitoring, transparency and community participation to ensure promises translate into long-term protection.

The approval signals a new model for high-altitude development—one that aims to protect biodiversity while reinforcing India’s strategic preparedness.

The Supreme Court (SC) bans mining near wildlife sanctuaries, ordering a nationwide restriction on mining activities within one kilometre of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. The decision aims to safeguard India’s rich biodiversity and protect ecologically sensitive regions.

A Bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran issued the ruling while hearing pleas related to the Saranda Wildlife Sanctuary (SWL) and the Sasangdaburu Conservation Reserve (SCR) in Jharkhand. The Court observed that mining near protected areas poses serious threats to wildlife and ecological balance.

The SC bans mining near wildlife sanctuaries to ensure long-term environmental protection. It directed the Jharkhand government to officially notify the Saranda region as a wildlife sanctuary and protect the rights of tribals and forest dwellers under the Forest Rights Act. The State was also instructed to widely publicize this protection measure.

Earlier, the Bench had asked Jharkhand to declare Saranda, an ecologically rich forest, as a reserve forest. The government’s affidavit revealed plans to expand the sanctuary area to 57,519.41 hectares—significantly larger than the original proposal.

This historic decision reinforces the Supreme Court’s commitment to sustainable development and wildlife conservation.

India reaffirmed its commitment to protecting biodiversity and promoting harmony between people and nature on Biosphere Day. The International Day for Biosphere Reserves is observed every year on November 3 to celebrate nature-friendly coexistence.

The government said India has 18 biosphere reserves spread across forests, mountains, islands, and coastal regions. Among them, 13 are part of UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves. These regions showcase India’s long-term dedication to preserving nature and supporting local communities.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change runs a centrally sponsored scheme for biodiversity conservation. It provides funds to states for nature protection and sustainable development projects, implemented mainly by State Forest Departments.

Projects like Tiger, Elephant, and Green India Mission continue to strengthen ecological balance and community welfare. With rising forest cover and innovative conservation models, India remains a global example of sustainable living and responsible environmental management.
