Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India’s rapid economic growth is strongly tied to its energy and shipping sectors. Speaking at India Maritime Week 2025, he highlighted that nearly half of India’s $4.3 trillion GDP comes from external trade, making shipping vital for national progress.

Puri said India currently consumes 5.6 million barrels of crude oil per day and will soon reach 6 million barrels. The International Energy Agency estimates India will drive 30% of the global rise in energy demand over the next two decades. This will increase the country’s shipping needs for oil and gas transport.

During 2024-25, India imported 300 million metric tonnes of crude and exported 65 million tonnes. About 88% of crude and 51% of gas needs come from imports. Puri urged for stronger Indian ship ownership since only 20% of trade cargo moves on India-flagged vessels.

The minister said the government is promoting domestic shipbuilding, vessel financing, and cargo aggregation for PSUs. He noted that port capacity has nearly doubled since 2014, reflecting India’s vision to build a self-reliant maritime economy.

India has officially entered the hydrogen era, aiming to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, said Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The move has already reduced the cost of green hydrogen from $3.50 per kilogram to $3 per kilogram, potentially saving $150 billion in import costs.

Public sector units are planning to reach a 1 MMT production capacity by 2030. Tender capacities for 42 kilo tonnes per annum will increase to 170 KTPA. Green hydrogen projects totaling 900 KTPA capacity have already been awarded to 19 companies.

India is aiming to capture 10 percent of the global hydrogen market, according to the minister. He highlighted that the nation is the world’s third-largest energy consumer, third-largest crude importer, and fourth-largest refiner. The country holds 651.8 MMT of recoverable crude oil and 1,138.6 BCM of natural gas reserves.

The past decade has seen major reforms in the energy sector, from new licensing policies to open acreage licensing rounds. Investments of Rs 1.4 lakh crore have driven exploration and production, with 578 wells drilled in FY25—ONGC’s highest in 35 years—and over 5,000 exploratory and development wells, including offshore programs.

India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in high-level discussions with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev. The meeting occurred on the sidelines of an international economic forum, focusing on strategies to enhance bilateral trade and economic partnerships. Goyal actively pushed for increased investments and smoother trade flows between the two nations.

Goyal later posted on X about the fruitful dialogue, underscoring the shared vision for growth. He highlighted how India and Russia can leverage each other’s strengths—India’s vast consumer market and Russia’s abundant natural resources. The talks delved into critical sectors like energy, where Russia supplies oil and gas to meet India’s rising demands. Both leaders explored opportunities in defense manufacturing, aiming to co-develop advanced technologies.

Patrushev praised India’s economic resilience and committed Russia to deeper integration. Discussions addressed removing non-tariff barriers that hinder exports. Goyal advocated for digital payment systems to facilitate small and medium enterprise trades. Agriculture emerged as another focal point, with plans for joint ventures in food processing and sustainable farming techniques.

This interaction reinforces the longstanding strategic alliance between India and Russia, forged during the Cold War and strengthened in recent years. Despite Western sanctions on Russia, India has maintained robust ties, with bilateral trade surging to over $65 billion in the last fiscal year. Goyal emphasized diversifying supply chains to counter global disruptions, such as those from the Ukraine conflict.

Analysts see these talks as pivotal for India’s “Make in India” initiative. Russia offers expertise in heavy industries, while India provides a skilled workforce and innovation hubs. The duo agreed to establish a joint working group for regular follow-ups, targeting a 50% trade increase by 2025.

Goyal’s diplomatic outreach signals India’s proactive stance in multipolar world dynamics. By bolstering ties with Russia, India secures energy stability and technological advancements. Future summits may build on this momentum, fostering a resilient economic corridor in Eurasia.

India added 27GW of renewable energy capacity from April to August 2025. Of this, 20GW was commissioned during this period. Another 142GW is under construction, says a report by HSBC citing the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Commissioning of interstate transmission lines is progressing gradually. This is expected to speed up renewable project installations. Recent mergers, acquisitions, and potential listings by developers should also provide more capital to accelerate capacity additions.

Solar plus energy storage systems are now cheaper than ever. Recent tenders discovered tariffs as low as ₹2.7-2.76/kWh. Developers will supply power for peak and morning hours along with normal solar generation. These savings can help maintain profitability despite lower tariffs.

Power demand is slowly rising, with September seeing a 3% year-on-year increase. Experts expect a further rise in October and November due to colder weather and higher industrial activity. Slower tendering and clearing old auction backlogs could strengthen investor confidence in India’s renewable sector.

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister *Bhatti Vikramarka* described *Singareni Coal Mines* as the “soul” of the state government while announcing *bonuses for workers*. He emphasized that the state government and Singareni management decided to distribute a portion of the company’s profits among employees, recognizing their crucial contribution to the organization and the energy sector.

The Deputy CM highlighted that over the past decade, the company had lost two mining blocks due to non-participation and alleged mismanagement. He noted that these blocks eventually came under the control of influential political leaders of that period, implying the need for stronger governance and worker-focused policies.

Bhatti Vikramarka’s remarks underline the government’s commitment to *supporting employees, safeguarding public resources*, and ensuring that profits are fairly shared with the workforce. The announcement reinforces the role of Singareni as a vital public enterprise integral to Telangana’s economy and energy security, while promoting transparency and accountability in management decisions.

The coming week is expected to be crucial for Indian equities as multiple domestic and global developments unfold. Investors are closely watching GST 2.0 implementation, H-1B visa fee hikes, and India-US trade talks. Foreign institutional investor (FII) activity will also guide market momentum.

From September 22, GST 2.0 will reduce the current four-rate structure to two slabs: 5 per cent and 18 per cent. Taxes on several goods have been cut, promising immediate relief for consumers. Market participants expect the reforms to boost business sentiment.

US President Donald Trump announced a sharp increase in the H-1B visa fee to $100,000. The fee will apply only to new visa applications. Any progress in India-US trade negotiations could further impact investor confidence, as a US delegation is currently in India.

The domestic market ended last week on a strong note. Nifty gained 0.85 per cent to 25,327.05, while Sensex rose 721.53 points to 82,626.23. Sectoral indices such as PSU banks, realty, energy, and services recorded healthy gains. FIIs sold equities worth Rs 1,327.38 crore, the lowest outflow in weeks, while DIIs bought Rs 11,177.37 crore.
