New Delhi: Retirement Fund Withdrawal Automation is set to become a reality as the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) plans to automate the process of final provident fund (PF) withdrawals. The move aims to make claim settlements faster and easier for millions of employees across India.

At present, EPFO already processes some advance withdrawal claims automatically. With the upcoming reform, Retirement Fund Withdrawal Automation will extend to final PF withdrawal claims as well. This will allow members to receive their funds directly in their bank accounts with minimal paperwork and quicker processing time.

Officials said the organisation also plans to automate PF account transfers when employees change jobs. This will remove the need for submitting manual forms and reduce delays in moving PF balances between accounts.

EPFO has more than seven crore subscribers in India. The automation initiative aims to improve transparency, reduce processing delays, and provide faster access to retirement savings for employees.

India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has signed an MoU with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to provide doorstep Digital Life Certificate (DLC) services to pensioners under the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 1995.

Under this partnership, IPPB will use its vast network of 1.65 lakh post offices and over 3 lakh postal service providers, including postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks. Equipped with digital authentication tools, they will help pensioners submit their life certificates from home, removing the need to visit bank branches or EPFO offices.

EPFO will bear the entire cost of issuing Digital Life Certificates, making the service completely free for pensioners. IPPB MD and CEO R. Viswesvaran said the initiative strengthens the bank’s mission to deliver citizen-centric financial services across India, especially to rural and semi-urban pensioners.

This move aligns with the government’s Digital India and Ease of Living initiatives. It ensures inclusive service delivery using biometric technology and postal infrastructure. Once the process is complete, pensioners will receive an SMS confirmation and can view their life certificate online the next day.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has simplified its partial withdrawal rules. It combined 13 clauses into three main categories: Essential Needs, Housing Needs, and Special Circumstances. The reform makes withdrawals faster, simpler, and more transparent for nearly 30 crore members who hold Rs 30 lakh crore collectively.

Under EPFO 3.0, members can withdraw up to 75 per cent of their total balance while keeping at least 25 per cent for retirement. The minimum service requirement is now 12 months for all withdrawals, replacing the previous rules that varied by purpose.

Members no longer need to submit proof for Special Circumstances withdrawals, reducing paperwork. EPFO has also increased limits for education and marriage withdrawals to 10 and 5, respectively, giving more flexibility to members.

Stricter rules apply to final settlements. Members can apply for early settlement only 12 months after leaving a job, and pension withdrawals are allowed 36 months later. Full withdrawals after job loss are exempt from the 25 per cent minimum balance. While the changes improve efficiency, they may delay access for unemployed workers.

The Supreme Court asks response on portal for unclaimed assets, highlighting the need for transparency. On October 6, 2025, a Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notices to the Union Government and key financial regulators.

The petition urged the creation of a centralised digital platform. This system would allow citizens to trace and recover inactive or unclaimed financial assets. Furthermore, it would combine data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).

The court directed the Union of India, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, National Savings Institute, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), and Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) to respond.

This portal could make it easier for citizens to check their operational and inactive holdings in one place. Moreover, it could speed up asset recovery and reduce disputes. Experts say it would also improve efficiency in banking and insurance.

Therefore, the Supreme Court’s move reflects growing demands for digital solutions in governance. Citizens and experts now await government responses to this significant proposal.
