Indian equities are set to rebound as key factors behind their recent underperformance begin to reverse, Morgan Stanley said in a report. The firm expects front-loaded capital expenditure and GST rate cuts to drive growth in the coming quarters.

Morgan Stanley sees a 50 per cent chance that the BSE Sensex will reach 89,000 by June 2026, implying a 6 per cent upside. It said India’s growth cycle will strengthen, supported by RBI’s rate cuts and a lower cash reserve ratio (CRR).

The firm cited deregulation, liquidity infusion, and a possible India-US trade deal as major catalysts. It added that easing ties with China and GST cuts worth ₹1.5 trillion could lift investor sentiment. Analysts believe falling oil intensity in GDP and stronger exports will help cut real rates and steady inflation.

Morgan Stanley prefers domestic cyclicals such as financials, consumer discretionary, and industrials over defensives. The firm expects stronger foreign inflows and monetary easing to further boost India’s equity outlook in the near term.

The Central government said on Thursday that the US administration has expressed interest in expanding energy cooperation with India. Discussions are currently ongoing between both nations.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India has aimed to diversify energy procurement for many years, prioritising stable prices and secure supplies. The current US administration has shown interest in strengthening these energy ties.

Despite previous US tariff hikes, India’s exports to the US rose to $45.82 billion in the first half of the current financial year, a 13.3% increase from last year. The government sees potential to import $12–13 billion worth of crude oil and natural gas from the US without changing refinery configurations.

India is also likely to source more renewable energy technologies from the US as part of the trade discussions. Chief Negotiator Rajesh Agrawal is already in the US, working with the negotiating team to finalise bilateral commitments and boost climate-friendly energy cooperation.

Pakistan remains trapped in a cycle of debt despite receiving IMF loans, according to a new report. The loans are mainly used to manage short-term needs rather than long-term recovery. Islamabad’s repeated failure to implement reforms has worsened fiscal vulnerabilities. IMF funds have become routine lifelines rather than exceptional support.

The report highlighted inconsistencies in Pakistan’s trade and revenue data. Revenue collection fell short by 1.2 trillion rupees, while import figures showed an $11 billion discrepancy over two fiscal years. The IMF has demanded corrective measures and transparency to restore investor confidence. Authorities hesitated to revise historical data due to concerns over growth and exports.

Debt obligations already exceed $7 billion, with external debt at 35.1% of GDP. Pakistan spends nearly 30% of export earnings on debt servicing. Exports remain stagnant, while imports exceed 22% of GDP. Short-term borrowing continues, locking the country in dependency.

Governance and revenue reforms have achieved limited results. The World Bank’s $20 billion programme supports energy, education, and infrastructure but falls short of annual debt requirements. Analysts argue that Pakistan must implement structural reforms to escape the cycle of IMF dependency.

It promises $100 billion in investments and one million new jobs within 15 years, strengthening India’s manufacturing and export competitiveness.

The pact, effective from October 1, expands market access for goods and services while promoting ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. It covers 14 chapters, including trade facilitation, intellectual property, sustainable development, and investment promotion. Key sectors such as dairy, coal, and agriculture remain protected under the deal.

The four EFTA nations — Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein — pledged $50 billion FDI in 10 years and another $50 billion later. These long-term investments target innovation, research, and high-value manufacturing, expected to generate one million direct jobs in India.

A dedicated India–EFTA Desk was launched in February 2025 to assist investors. It will promote collaborations in renewable energy, engineering, digital transformation, and life sciences.

The recent GST reforms have reduced tax rates across key sectors, strengthening Jharkhand’s industrial and economic momentum. These changes lower production costs, enhance affordability, and drive local manufacturing growth in major hubs like Jamshedpur and Bokaro.

Steel and heavy engineering contribute about 25% of India’s steel output from Jharkhand. The GST cuts support sectors that depend on steel, such as construction and automotive. Taxes on two-wheelers and small cars dropped from 28% to 18%, while tractors below 1800cc now attract only 5%.

Auto components and commercial vehicles also enjoy lower tax rates, making machinery and vehicles cheaper. This reform boosts demand, increases production, and creates more jobs in Jharkhand’s steel and engineering ecosystem. Over one lakh workers benefit from the sector’s expansion, supported by thousands of MSMEs.

The reforms improve domestic consumption and enhance Jharkhand’s export competitiveness. The state exports steel and machinery to the US, China, Japan, and Europe. By reducing costs and promoting efficiency, the GST reforms place Jharkhand firmly on the path of industrial excellence and sustainable growth.

India is working to expand its textile sector to $350 billion by 2030, with $100 billion in exports. Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh said the goal also includes making the industry carbon-neutral. He called cotton the soul of Indian agriculture and praised farmers’ resilience on World Cotton Day.

Addressing an event by the Ministry of Textiles and CITI, Singh said the sector faces climate change and sustainability challenges. He urged efficient use of water and electricity to protect nature. He added that renewable energy and soil conservation are vital for cotton farmers’ prosperity.

Singh said India covers 40% of the global cotton area but has low productivity compared to other countries. The government’s Mission for Cotton Productivity aims to bridge this gap. He noted that the rise in Minimum Support Prices shows the government’s commitment to farmer welfare.

The minister highlighted opportunities in natural fibres like ramie, flax, and milkweed. Minister of State Pabitra Margherita said India must lead in quality and sustainability. He added that the Kasturi Cotton initiative supports the government’s ‘5F’ vision — from farm to foreign markets.

US President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday. Trump called the conversation “very good” and highlighted discussions on economy and trade between the two nations.

Trump shared on Truth Social that both leaders plan to continue talks and meet in the near future, in Brazil and the US. He added that he enjoyed the call and expected stronger cooperation between the countries.

Lula also confirmed the call on X, recalling the good chemistry they shared during their brief meeting at the UN General Assembly in New York last month. Lula stressed that direct contact could restore the 201-year friendly relations between the two largest democracies in the West. He highlighted the US surplus with Brazil in goods and services.

The Brazilian President urged the US to lift tariffs on Brazilian goods. He may meet Trump again during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in late October. The call comes after the Trump administration imposed a 50% tariff on Brazil, part of broader tensions with BRICS nations. Trade talks with India have also resumed, aiming to address similar tariff issues.

Shares of Hyundai Motor India Limited could fall sharply, with a correction of over 26 per cent expected, analysts say. InCred Equities has maintained a “Reduce” rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 2,023 per share.

The brokerage noted that the recent GST reduction is unlikely to significantly boost Hyundai’s sales. High dependence on large SUVs, exports, and parts, which make up 70 per cent of revenue, may limit the benefit from tax changes.

Hyundai’s total sales declined by 4.23 per cent in August, with domestic sales dropping to 44,001 units from 49,525 units a year ago. Exports grew 21 per cent to 16,500 units, supporting overall performance. The company aims to strengthen India as its largest export hub outside South Korea.

Consolidated net profit for Q1 FY26 fell 8 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,369.23 crore. While Hyundai continues expanding globally and supporting government initiatives like Make in India, near-term stock performance may remain under pressure.
