India’s top banking giants—State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank—continue to dominate long-term investment conversations as credit growth stabilises and market conditions shift. Among the three, SBI has emerged as the strongest performer, delivering a stellar 18.94% gain in one year, supported by consistent momentum across six-month, three-month, and one-month periods. Its strong rally and robust technical structure make it the current market favourite.

HDFC Bank, despite being India’s premier private lender, has shown stable but moderate returns, remaining range-bound due to consolidation post-merger. The bank maintains strong fundamentals, a sticky deposit base, and long-term growth potential.

ICICI Bank, known for its superior profitability and balanced retail/SME growth, has displayed short-term weakness. However, its long-term fundamentals remain strong.

Brokerage house Jefferies retains Buy ratings on all three banks, projecting the highest upside for ICICI Bank (₹1,760), followed by HDFC Bank (₹1,200). SBI’s upside is seen as stable rather than aggressive. Motilal Oswal also favours all three due to their resilience, strong capital buffers, and healthy asset quality.

Experts conclude: ICICI suits growth investors, HDFC offers premium stability, and SBI provides the strongest momentum and best value for long-term investors.

Gold prices hit fresh record highs in morning trade on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) on Tuesday. Investors turned to the precious metal amid rising global uncertainties and expectations of US Federal Reserve rate cuts.

MCX Gold December futures climbed to an all-time high of Rs 1,20,769 per 10 grams. Silver December futures rose 0.12 per cent to Rs 1,47,701 per kg. International gold prices also surged as investors sought safe-haven assets amid economic and political tensions in the United States.

Concerns over a US government shutdown added to the bullish sentiment. The shutdown, now in its seventh day, has frozen about $1.7 trillion for federal agencies, roughly a quarter of the annual budget, raising fears of potential job losses. Analysts said these factors have supported gold prices for a third consecutive session.

Traders are closely watching upcoming events, including the Federal Open Market Committee meeting minutes, a speech by the Fed Chair, China’s market reopening, and US shutdown updates. Experts said any positive or negative developments from these events could further influence gold and silver prices in the near term.

Mutual funds drove most of the buying, contributing Rs 3.65 lakh crore, supported by monthly SIP inflows of over Rs 25,000 crore. Their cash holdings remained high at Rs 1.98 lakh crore in August.

Insurance companies and pension funds added over Rs 1 lakh crore, while other investors including portfolio managers, alternative funds, and banks contributed the remainder. Analysts, however, note early signs of slowing momentum as market returns stagnate and global headwinds affect sentiment.

Despite strong DII inflows, Indian equities have underperformed global peers. The Sensex rose just 2 per cent and the Nifty 4 per cent in dollar terms this year, compared with double-digit gains in major Asian and Western markets. Rising redemptions from small-cap and thematic funds, along with GST rationalisation and festive spending, could limit new equity allocations.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have remained net sellers, offloading Rs 1.80 lakh crore so far in 2025. However, FIIs continue buying in the primary market, acquiring Rs 1,559 crore in September. Analysts believe corporate earnings growth above 15 per cent in FY27 could turn around FPI sentiment.

Inflation is falling to a historic low since 2004, helped by GST rationalisation and improving India-US trade talks. The RBI Monetary Policy Committee will meet from September 29 to October 1.

In August, the RBI kept the policy rate at 5.50 per cent after previous easing. Dr Soumya Kanti Ghosh, SBI’s Chief Economic Advisor, said CPI inflation could drop another 65-75 basis points due to GST cuts. Without GST changes, CPI is already below 2 per cent in September and October.

Ghosh added that the 2019 GST rationalisation reduced inflation by 35 basis points in just months. With the new CPI series and base revisions, inflation should stay near the lower end of the RBI target, 4±2 per cent, through FY26 and FY27. October CPI could even reach 1.1 per cent.

SBI believes a September rate cut is justified. Ghosh said the RBI must communicate clearly to avoid mistakes. Lower inflation and stable growth give the central bank room to cut rates and support the economy.

Washington: President Donald Trump announced the removal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, accusing her of mortgage fraud. He alleged that Cook misrepresented her primary residence on loan documents in 2021, a charge that was referred to the Justice Department by Bill Pulte, chief of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Cook strongly rejected the allegations and Trump’s decision. She stated the move was not legally valid and confirmed she would not step down. Cook’s legal team, led by attorney Abbe Lowell, is preparing to challenge the dismissal, calling it an attack on the independence of the Federal Reserve.

Legal experts argue the President may have overstepped his powers. The Federal Reserve Act allows removal of governors only “for cause,” generally linked to misconduct during service, not past personal matters. This creates a legal gray area that could lead to a prolonged court battle.

The dismissal has triggered political and economic debate across the US. Observers warn that interfering with the Fed’s independence could shake market confidence and set a dangerous precedent. The case may eventually reach the Supreme Court, testing the limits of presidential authority over independent institutions.
