The debate around Punjab has no water grew sharper as Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann questioned why Haryana keeps demanding more when Punjab struggles with severe shortages. At the Northern Zonal Council meeting in Faridabad, he said Punjab has no water, so the Centre must rethink outdated sharing agreements.

Mann said the Union government agreed to defer eleven Punjab-related agenda items. Most of them involved water disputes with neighbouring states. He added that Himachal Pradesh raised a new claim, seeking 7% staffing rights in Chandigarh. Mann argued that every neighbouring state wants something from Punjab while ignoring Punjab’s own challenges.

The Chief Minister opposed Haryana’s demand for SYL canal water and suggested that Yamuna water should flow to Haryana instead. He said the SYL could shift to a YSL (Yamuna Sutlej Link) model to match today’s realities. He also pointed out Rajasthan’s claim over the Harike and Ferozpur waterworks and objections to new appointments on the BBMB.

Mann reminded the Centre about unpaid flood-relief funds worth ₹1,600 crore. He also sought major desilting projects for Harike, Ranjit Sagar Dam and Bhakra Dam, which would cost ₹10,000 crore. He welcomed the status quo ordered by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on key Punjab issues.

They are repairing and rebuilding homes damaged by recent floods. Organisations supporting the effort include Guru-Adab Morcha, Sirhind, Sangat Seva Samprada, and Lok Raj Punjab.

Dr Manjeet Singh Randhawa, convener of Guru-Adab Morcha, said Sikh sampradas will repair homes and offer long-term support to flood victims. They will promote orchard farming, cooperative dairy farms, and profitable agri-industries with the Sikh community’s help.

The community made this decision near the samadhi of Baba Budha Ji at Chak Ramdas, close to the Sakki embankment. Sikh leaders said that, with the blessings of the Guru Granth Sahib, they aim to rebuild homes and create strong, permanent river embankments to prevent future disasters.

Prominent leaders, including Baba Sardara Singh, Baba Kirpal Singh, Baba Satnam Singh, Bhai Sandeep Singh Khajanekot, and Dr Manjeet Singh Randhawa, attended the event. At the Sakki embankment breach site, sangat staged a symbolic protest. They demanded that Punjab gain control of the Bhakra and Pong dams and urged locals to join in rebuilding lives.

Political parties in Punjab are rushing to raise funds for flood relief as the 2027 assembly polls approach. Punjab flood relief fundraising is visible across the state. Parties hope voters will remember their work.

The Aam Aadmi Party launched the Rangla Punjab Vikas Fund. Leaders and district officials are mobilising donations from NRIs, businesses, and supporters. Local MLAs now compete to show bigger contributions and visible relief on the ground.

The BJP delivers ration packets with the Prime Minister’s image. The party expects central help: a Rs 600-crore soft loan and earlier SDRF instalments. Funds under schemes for roads, schools, and drinking water repairs are also expected soon.

The Shiromani Akali Dal and SGPC distribute cash, wheat seeds, and grain bags. They target villages affected by breaches in embankments.

Congress activists made isolated efforts. Leaders donated personally and distributed kits. However, the party lacks a coordinated statewide relief plan. Farmers face heavy losses. Silted fields covering lakh-scale acres will take months to clear. Many crops are ruined.

With Punjab’s tight finances, parties rely on private donations, CSR, and central assistance. These funds meet urgent needs and shape voters’ memories before the next election.

Silence has replaced the usual buzz in Kapurthala’s flood-hit schools. The recent Punjab floods have severely disrupted education, forcing schools to remain closed for weeks. The overflowing Beas river on August 12 submerged villages in Sultanpur Lodhi, leaving children cut off from learning.

Three schools — Government Primary School in Baupur, Government High School in Baupur Jadid, and Government Primary School in Kammewal — remain shut. Teachers cleaned grounds in hopes of restarting classes, but water returned. Roads are broken, homes cracked, and families displaced. Parents, mostly farmers, now face crop loss and financial strain, with children’s studies suffering.

Sukhdev Singh, a farmer from Baupur Kadim, said his three children sit idle after floods destroyed both fields and schools. Another parent, Satnam Singh, shared how his Class 10 son has not studied for a month, describing cracks in both their home and his child’s spirit.

Teachers are improvising with phone calls, worksheets, and home visits, while online classes are arranged for some. Exams for secondary classes have been postponed, and primary exams may see underprepared students. Officials say safety comes first, though the road to recovery looks long for both families and education.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was stopped by Punjab Police while visiting flood-hit areas in Punjab. The incident happened when Gandhi tried to reach Toor, a border village across the Ravi river.

Earlier, he met affected families in Ghonewal and Gurchak villages of Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts. When police stopped him from crossing the river, Gandhi questioned their decision. A viral video showed him asking: “You are telling me you cannot keep me safe on Indian territory? Is it not India?”

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa accompanied him. Gandhi argued that the Leader of Opposition should not be stopped from meeting his people.

The restriction sparked strong reactions in the Congress camp. Former CM Charanjit Singh Channi called it “unfortunate.” Warring asked if Indians were unsafe even on their own soil. Senior leader Partap Singh Bajwa accused the AAP government of using “political excuses” to avoid accountability.

Congress leaders also criticized both AAP and BJP for ignoring border villagers. They said flood victims need support, not excuses.

The episode has turned into a political controversy, highlighting anger over poor relief efforts in flood-hit Punjab.

For years, Punjab’s border belt has linked drones with drugs and smuggling from across the border. But in the recent floods, drones have taken on a new role — bringing hope, not death. The Punjab Police, district officials, and local farmers are now using drones to deliver essential supplies to stranded families.

In villages around Ramdass and Ajnala — including Ghonewal, Jassar, Sudhaar, and Sufiyan — 12 drones are in operation. With a range of 5 km, these drones carry food, water, medicines, and even animal feed directly to households. Each drone can lift up to 10 kg and serves nearly 100 families daily.

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said drones are being used for three key tasks — mapping flooded areas, broadcasting safety messages, and dropping relief materials. Farmers’ agricultural drones, once used for spraying fields, are now saving lives.

Residents expressed gratitude, saying drones replaced the fear of drugs with the gift of survival. This mission is supported by Punjab Police, NDRF, Army, BSF, and private partners. For many, drones are now symbols of resilience and unity in crisis.

Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel has called the Punjab floods a “man-made tragedy.” He said the unregulated release of water from dams by the Bhakra Beas Management Board caused flooding in hundreds of villages. Baghel, the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab, visited affected areas in Amritsar and Gurdaspur before making this statement.

According to him, both the AAP government in Punjab and the BJP-led Centre are responsible for this disaster. He said they must accept their failure. Baghel also criticized the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ignoring Punjab during this crisis.

The floods have continued for nearly two weeks, and thousands of people remain affected. Baghel alleged that AAP ministers and MLAs only toured flood-hit areas for photos and publicity instead of providing real relief. He called this attitude irresponsible and unfair to the people who are still struggling.

By terming the crisis a man-made disaster, Baghel demanded accountability from both the state and central governments. His remarks have sparked political debate, as Punjab continues to face the impact of heavy flooding.

His decision is being seen as a strong humanitarian move that will give financial security to the affected households.

He alleged that the sudden water release damaged hundreds of houses and covered farmlands in Amritsar with silt and mud. Warring said the Irrigation Department failed to protect people living along the Ravi River. Senior Congress leaders also criticised the government for its “complete failure” in handling the disaster.

Warring demanded an investigation into the dam’s water release. He stressed that the people of Punjab deserve answers and protection from such man-made crises.

The Congress leader also announced that the party has raised over ₹2 crore for flood relief. Committees have been set up in Ferozepur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, and Ludhiana constituencies to mobilise resources and ensure proper distribution of aid.

He added that party workers were helping farmers by clearing silt from their fields. Teams are being formed to restore soil health and reduce long-term damage to agriculture. Warring said the Congress would stand firmly with the affected families until normal life is restored.
