New Delhi: The government introduced the Online Gaming Bill in the Lok Sabha to regulate India’s rapidly growing digital gaming industry. The proposed legislation aims to create a national framework to address concerns such as betting, addiction, and financial risks associated with online games.

The Bill proposes mandatory licensing for all online gaming platforms. It also introduces strict penalties for companies that promote gambling activities under the guise of gaming. Officials emphasized that the move is intended to protect users and bring accountability to the industry.

To further strengthen safeguards, the Bill includes provisions to protect minors, prevent excessive gaming, and regulate in-app purchases. It also proposes the creation of a central regulatory authority that will monitor online gaming platforms, advertisements, and ensure user safety across the country.

Officials stated that the Bill aims to bring uniformity across states, many of which currently operate under their own set of rules for online gaming. The government believes the measure will balance industry growth with regulation, noting that while gaming boosts investment and employment, it also poses social risks.

Industry bodies have welcomed the Bill, calling it a step toward clarity and innovation. They believe a well-defined legal framework will attract foreign investment and foster consumer trust. However, they have also urged the government to hold consultations to ensure that the law does not stifle startups or smaller companies in the gaming ecosystem.
