“National Highway 10 is Sikkim’s lifeline, but its narrow width and susceptibility to landslides frequently disrupt travel, affecting tourists, businesses, essential supplies, and emergency services,” Bhutia said. He emphasized that upgrading NH-10 into an all-weather highway and building a secondary route through safer terrain are essential for the state’s economic and tourism growth.

At ITM 2025, the minister showcased Sikkim as a “jewel of the Himalayas,” rich in natural beauty, biodiversity, and spiritual heritage. Despite covering just 0.2% of India’s geographical area, Sikkim houses 26% of the world’s floral biodiversity, including snow leopards, red pandas, and over 550 bird species.

Bhutia also highlighted recent infrastructure projects under Central schemes like Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, NEC, and PM-DevINE, including ropeways in Bhaleydhunga and Pelling, the skywalk at Pelling, Nathula border facilities, and the Gangtok Cultural Village. The mega homestay scheme, with over 1,000 beneficiaries, aims to strengthen rural tourism.

To attract high-value travelers, Sikkim has launched a 26-seater helicopter service between Bagdogra and Gangtok, and the upcoming Sivok–Rangpo railway line will further enhance connectivity. Bhutia concluded that reliable highway infrastructure is critical for Sikkim to emerge as a top global destination for nature, adventure, wellness, heritage, and sustainable tourism.
