This marks India’s seventh time on the 47-member body based in Geneva. Following the election, India pledged to act as a bridge-builder and promote global cooperation on human rights.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, said the election reflected India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. He noted on X that India looked forward to serving this goal during its tenure. India emphasized that its nomination represented its dedication to advancing human rights globally and fostering dialogue to achieve collective progress.

India highlighted that its commitment to human rights stems from its Constitution, which guarantees fundamental rights and promotes justice, liberty, and equality. The country’s guiding philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—“The world is one family”—underlines its belief in unity and mutual respect.

In the proforma voting, India received 177 votes out of 188. Other nations elected included Britain, Pakistan, Egypt, and Vietnam. India last served on the HRC in 2024 and returns after a mandated one-year break.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi will preside over the World Standards Day (WSD) programme on Tuesday. The event is organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. WSD recognises experts, engineers, scientists, policymakers, and innovators who ensure quality, safety, and sustainability.

The celebration will take place at the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS). BIS will release the National Lighting Code of India 2025 and launch the Learning Management System (LMS) and Online Standards Development (OSD) Module of the BIS Standards Portal.

This year’s theme, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Sustainable Development Goals,” highlights the role of international standards in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BIS works with governments, industries, academia, and civil society to promote alignment and global cooperation.

World Standards Day began in 1970 to raise awareness about the importance of standards. BIS collaborates with ministries and industry associations to identify gaps and formulate standards. Recently, BIS seized goods from e-commerce companies that failed to meet certified standards, ensuring public safety and compliance.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has strongly warned against the weaponisation of technology, urging countries to use innovation responsibly for the public good. Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai, she said technology must empower people, not divide nations.

Moreover, she highlighted that India has become a global fintech leader, setting new benchmarks in innovation, inclusion, and scale. According to her, India’s digital initiatives such as UPI and Aadhaar prove that technology can bring transparency and growth. She stated, “The simple motive is to use it for public good and not weaponise it.”

However, the Finance Minister expressed concern that some nations use their technological strength to restrict trade and innovation. Such actions, she warned, hurt global progress and weaken trust among nations. Therefore, she urged for greater cooperation and shared responsibility in the use of technology.

At the same time, she noted that India is negotiating trade deals with the United States, which has recently raised tariffs on Indian goods and increased H1B visa fees. These measures, she added, affect thousands of skilled Indian workers.

Furthermore, Sitharaman stressed that technology should unite people through inclusion and fairness. She said responsible innovation can promote economic growth and reduce inequality. Her remarks reflected India’s vision for an open, transparent, and cooperative digital future.

In conclusion, she called on global leaders to build trust and ensure technology serves humanity. “Only through collaboration can innovation become a true force for public good,” Sitharaman said.

Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay called for United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform at the 80th UN General Assembly session. He emphasised the inclusion of India and Japan as permanent members to reflect global realities. Tobgay highlighted the need for a UN that is representative, responsive, and results-oriented.

He stated that the Security Council’s current structure is outdated and unrepresentative. Tobgay argued that reforms should expand both permanent and non-permanent memberships. He said nations like India and Japan deserve a place due to their economic growth, diplomatic leadership, and global influence.

Bhutan has consistently advocated UNSC reforms, calling the current Council a “relic of the past.” Tobgay reiterated that a reformed Council must reflect today’s geopolitical and economic landscape. The focus should be on effective multilateralism that delivers outcomes, not just resolutions.

By supporting India and Japan, Bhutan adds its voice to the growing international call for balanced and inclusive global governance. Tobgay’s statements underscore Bhutan’s commitment to a more representative UN capable of addressing modern global challenges efficiently.
